Bravida to take overall responsibility for all installations in Facebook’s new Luleå data centre
Bravida has been commissioned to plan and install all electricity, heating & plumbing and HVAC systems in Facebook’s new data centre in Luleå, which is set to become one of the most high-tech and energy-efficient data centres in the world.
Energy use as well as the costs of building and running the facility will be significantly lower than at most modern data centres. Along with Facebook’s two data centres in the US, the facility will be one of the most energy-efficient in the world.
“The agreement is the first of its kind, and we are very proud of our partnership with NCC and that Facebook has entrusted us with overall responsibility for the technical installations. This is a key area for us today, and we expect this type of investment is to increase in the Nordic region,” Mats O Paulsson, Bravida’s CEO, says.
To meet the need for cooling in the data centre, the system will rely solely on a cooler based on outdoor air and misting, a method known as evaporative cooling.
“This solution differs from conventional server systems. To operate correctly, it needs a cool and dry climate,” Mika Sundholm, Bravida’s Project Manager, says.
In the first stage, which is now being initiated, servers will be installed in about half of the 28,000 m2 building. The data centre will be certified under the LEED green building certification system and Bravida will have as many as 200 employees working on site at any one time. Work will commence immediately and project planning is expected to be completed by March 2013.
The project will take the form of a joint venture between NCC and two US construction firms, DPR Construction and Fortis Construction.
